Last year I was thrilled to be a Dulux DIAlogue on Tour winner. The prize was an inspirational expedition which took the five winning design professionals to London and Stockholm in September. It was an all expenses paid tour, where we met and learnt from European and Scandinavian design talent such as Tom Dixon and Claesson Koivisto Rune among others. I would not have had this opportunity had it not been for the Design Institute of Australia (DIA)

On March 29 I’m presenting a talk at the DIA in Perth showcasing some of the fabulous work I got to see on that tour. My talk will cover a wide range of design experiences including architecture, interior design, product designers, graphic designers, furniture makers, fabric makers and artists. I’d love to see you there. Here are the details.

About The DIA

In my time as an architect and DIA member I have seen the advantages of mixing with other designers outside the immediate industry of architecture. The DIA represents all Australian design fields and all designers are welcome to join the organisation. The DIA is often considered purely the realm of interior designers and furniture suppliers but in fact it is intended to represent all aspects of design.

This includes individual members of the following design industry associations;

  • Australian Graphic Design Association
  • Australian Institute of Architects
  • Australian Institute of Landscape Architects
  • Australian Network for Art & Technology
  • Council for Humanities & Social Sciences
  • Council of Textile & Fashion Industries of Australia
  • Engineers Australia
  • National Association for the Visual Arts
  • Planning Institute of Australia
  • Digital Media
  • Furniture Design
  • Jewellery Design
  • Design Education
  • Design Management
  • Fashion Design
  • Exhibition Design
  • Textile Design
  • Graphic Design
  • Visual Communication
  • Interior Design
  • Interior Architecture
  • Architecture
  • Industrial Design

Through the exposure to the British Design Council on our tour our group realised the potential for the Design Institute of Australia to replicate the outstanding work of the British Design Council in the promotion of the UK design world both within the UK and abroad.

DIA Group Shot with Tom Dixon

Our group of five winners of the Dulux DIALogue Tour 2016 thought that the DIA could not only provide continue to provide a lively melting pot for designers of all backgrounds to meet and cross-fertilize ideas but to also advocate as a strong voice for Australia’s design industry. The DIA could promote the benefits of good design to the general community along with government agencies. There is nothing stopping Australia from emulating places such as Denmark where Danish design is held in high regard within their own country and around the world.

If you are interested in these ideas or you’d just like to see the new design trends from Europe come along on 29th March. You’ll be very welcome.
