I’m delighted that the Family Beach House in Cottesloe is a finalist in this years HIA ‘GreenSmart Energy Efficiency Award’.

We put a lot of thinking into the design elements and the materials used in this home. Sustainability was an important consideration right from the start. Our entry is one of two projects to have reached this level.

The Cottesloe site had a derelict timber framed cottage that was built in 1913. A new addition was added to the rear of the existing house.

We considered the environmental and sustainability factors with both the new and existing areas of the house.

We used passive design to harness elements of sun and wind. There are many layers of insulation to the new area of the house. These provide environmental performance far beyond standard rating requirements.

The existing building has new insulation below the timber floor, on external walls and within the ceiling space. We’ve added 6KW of solar panels to this home.

Sustainable building materials were installed for the new additon.

The project is also to entered in the Residential Addition Category. The winners will be announced in October.
