Part of a series of posts by Neil Cownie on The Future of Swanbourne Village
The City of Hobart commissioned this new bicycle and pedestrian bridge known as ‘Brooker Bridge’ over busy roads in Hobart. The bridge has been described as operating like a ‘Swiss Army Knife’ as it solves multiple issues and provides multiple functions. The bridge connects two buildings and the street with the grounds of the University of Tasmania while providing both a marker for passing vehicles and outlook for bridge users.
The light weight and open nature of the bridge allows bridge users to be seen as they cross the bridge while allowing an enjoyable experience in crossing the bridge to take in distant views. A partial roof covering also offers users a degree of shelter.
The bridge design offers multiple benefits to the community.
